General Questions about Psychological Testing


  1. What is psychological testing?
    Psychological testing is a process that evaluates cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning through standardized assessments and clinical interviews.
  2. What types of psychological tests are available?
    Common types include intelligence tests, neuropsychological assessments, personality tests, academic achievement tests, and diagnostic evaluations for mental health conditions.
  3. Who conducts psychological testing?
    Licensed psychologists or other qualified professionals with specialized training administer and interpret psychological tests.
  4. How long does psychological testing take?
    The length varies based on the type of assessment but typically ranges from 2 to 5 hours, with an average of 2.5 hours for most testing.
  5. Do you offer remote testing?
    Yes. The preference is in-person testing, however WPS does offer psychological test online for individuals not located in Colorado.
  6. Do I need a referral for psychological testing?
    No. WPS does not require a referral from a physician, psychiatrist, or therapist.


Purpose and Benefits


  1. Why would someone need psychological testing?
    Testing can help diagnose mental health conditions, learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, ADHD, autism, and emotional difficulties. It also provides insights for treatment planning.
  2. How can psychological testing help with ADHD or learning disabilities?
    Assessments for ADHD or learning disabilities evaluate attention, executive functioning, memory, and academic skills to guide appropriate interventions.
  3. Can psychological testing help with treatment planning?
    Yes, results inform therapists, psychiatrists, and educators about the best strategies for treatment, medication management, and accommodations.


Process and Preparation


  1. What should I expect during the testing process?
    Expect a combination of questionnaires, problem-solving tasks, computer-based assessments, and structured interviews.
  2. How should I prepare for psychological testing?
    Get a good night’s sleep, eat a balanced meal beforehand, and bring any necessary documentation (previous evaluations, school/work reports, or medical records). Do not take any stimulant medication the day of testing.
  3. Will I receive the results immediately?
    Yes, WPS offers expedited results for an additional fee. For same day results, a $600 non-refundable deposit  is required, and is not reimbursable by insurance. With WPS, standard results typically take one to three weeks, as they require scoring, interpretation, and a written report. 


Insurance and Costs


  1. Does insurance cover psychological testing?
    Many insurance plans cover psychological testing, but coverage depends on the provider, reason for testing, and specific insurance policies. A quote of benefits is not a guarantee of payment. You will be responsible for any cost not covered by insurance.
  2. What if my insurance doesn’t cover testing?
    WPS offers private-pay options, payment plans. Please check Insurance and Private Pay section on the Home page for details.


Results and Next Steps


  1. What happens after the testing is complete?
    Your provider will schedule a 60-minute feedback session where they provide a detailed report with findings, diagnostic impressions (if applicable), and recommendations for treatment or support services.
  2. How long until I receive my results?
    At WPS, you'll receive your results within 1-2 weeks of your testing session. We also offer same day testing and results for an additional flat fee of $600 (not covered by insurance).
  3. Can psychological testing results be shared with my doctor, school, or employer?
    Yes, but only with your written consent. You can request reports be sent to specific professionals as needed.
  4. Can psychological testing be redone if I disagree with the results?
    In some cases, re-evaluation may be an option, but discussing concerns with the psychologist first is recommended.
