Can You See a Sports Psychologist Online?

Yes. Mental skills training translates well to video, and online sessions fit around practice, travel, and school. Here's how it works, and who it fits.

Why online works well for sport psychology

Much of sport and performance psychology is learning and practicing skills: breathing and resets, self-talk, imagery, focus cues, and routines. Those translate well to a video session. Online also solves the problems that keep athletes from getting help in the first place:

  • Schedules. No drive across town between school, practice, and homework.
  • Travel. Keep your sessions going during tournaments, away games, and the season.
  • Distance. Work with someone who understands sport, even if there isn't one near you.
  • Privacy. Some athletes prefer meeting from home rather than being seen walking into an office.

Who it fits

Online sessions work for athletes from youth sports through the professional level, and for performers, coaches, and business professionals. Teens often do well online, from a quiet room at home. Parents of young athletes can join part of a session or a parent workshop. A parent's guide to sports psychology for teen athletes.

Some situations are better in person, such as when an athlete has a hard time focusing on a screen, or wants to try NuCalm or other in-office services. Many people mix both.

What a session looks like

A session runs like it would in the office. You talk through what's happening in training and competition, learn a skill, and practice it together on video. Between sessions, you use it in practice and games and bring back what worked. Many athletes see meaningful progress in about six sessions.

How to set up

  • Use a laptop, tablet, or phone with a camera, in a quiet, private space.
  • Use headphones if others are home, so you can talk freely.
  • Check your internet connection before the session.
  • Have water and something to write on for skills you want to remember.
  • Know the address where you are. We confirm your location at the start of each session.
