Couples therapy

Couples Therapy in Arvada

When the same arguments keep repeating, or you feel more like roommates than partners, couples therapy helps you understand the pattern and build a better way of being together.

At a glance

  • Couples therapy with Dr. Ricki Walker, licensed psychologist.
  • Couples intake $475; couples sessions $400.
  • For communication, trust, intimacy, sexual concerns, and life transitions.
  • In person in Arvada or online. LGBTQIA+ affirming.

What couples therapy works on

Couples therapy helps partners in relationship distress restore a better level of connection and functioning. Rather than deciding who is right, it looks at the pattern you get caught in together, and what each of you needs to step out of it.

  • Communication that turns into criticism, defensiveness, or shutting down
  • Trust after an affair, a secret, or a broken promise
  • Intimacy and sexual concerns, or a relationship that feels distant
  • Conflict about money, parenting, family, or chores
  • Big transitions: a new baby, a move, illness, retirement, or a career change
  • Deciding whether, and how, to stay together

How it works

You start with a couples intake, where Dr. Walker learns about your relationship, your history together, and what each of you hopes will change. Together you set clear goals and a treatment plan. Sessions then combine understanding your patterns with practicing new ways of talking, repairing after conflict, and reconnecting. Between sessions, you may have things to try at home.

Who you'll work with

Couples therapy is provided by Dr. Ricki Walker, a licensed psychologist with a focus that includes relationship distress and LGBTQIA+ affirming care. If one partner would benefit from individual therapy alongside couples work, the office can help arrange it with another clinician.

Couples therapy questions

Do we both have to want couples therapy?
It helps when both partners are willing to come, even if one is more hesitant. Many couples start with mixed feelings. The first sessions are a chance to see whether this work fits you both.
Is couples therapy only for relationships in crisis?
No. Some couples come during a crisis, such as an affair or a breakdown in trust. Others come because the same arguments keep repeating, intimacy has faded, or a big transition, like a new baby, a move, or a career change, is straining the relationship.
Do you work with LGBTQIA+ couples?
Yes. Our care is LGBTQIA+ affirming, and Dr. Walker works with couples of all identities and relationship structures.
What does couples therapy cost?
A couples intake with Dr. Walker is $475 and ongoing couples sessions are $400. Insurance coverage for couples therapy varies by plan, so check your benefits. See Insurance and Fees.
Can couples therapy be online?
Yes. Sessions can be in person in Arvada or online for couples in Colorado, and possibly in participating PSYPACT states.
How do I ask about therapy?
