Why sport psychology is self-pay

Insurance covers services it considers medically necessary, which generally means treatment for a diagnosable mental health condition. The pressure and nerves that come with competition, high-stakes work, and auditions are understandable responses to challenge, not signs of a mental health condition.

Performance sessions are skills-based: focus, composure, confidence, and consistency. If other concerns come up, clinical services that may be covered by insurance can be arranged separately.

Cost questions

Does insurance cover psychological testing?
Many insurance plans cover psychological testing, but coverage depends on the provider, reason for testing, and specific insurance policy. A quote of benefits is not a guarantee of payment. You will be responsible for any cost not covered by insurance.
What if my insurance doesn't cover testing?
Private-pay options are available. See Insurance and Fees for details.
Is sport and performance psychology covered by insurance?
No. Insurance plans cover services they consider medically necessary, which generally means treatment for a diagnosable mental health condition. The pressure and nerves that come with competition, high-stakes work, and auditions are understandable responses to challenge rather than signs of a mental health condition, so performance sessions are offered on a self-pay basis.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
Self-pay clients are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate of costs before services begin.

Self-pay clients are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate of costs.
