ADHD Testing for Adults

If you have always worked twice as hard to stay organized, focused, and on time, testing can show whether ADHD is part of the picture and what would help.

At a glance

  • Testing for adults, including people diagnosed later in life. No referral is required.
  • Same-day results are available for an additional $600. Standard results typically take two to three weeks after testing.
  • Comprehensive testing is $2,900. Many insurance plans cover psychological testing.
  • Do not take any stimulant medication the day of testing.

How ADHD can show up in adults

  • Starting projects easily but struggling to finish them
  • Missing deadlines, appointments, or bills despite good intentions
  • Losing focus in meetings or conversations
  • Feeling restless, or always needing to be busy
  • Relying on last-minute pressure to get things done
  • Feeling overwhelmed by the planning that daily life takes

ADHD is often missed in childhood, especially in girls and women and in people whose symptoms are mostly inattentive rather than hyperactive. Strong grades or a successful career don't rule it out.

What ADHD testing evaluates

  • Attention and concentration
  • Executive functioning
  • Working memory
  • Processing speed
  • Mood, anxiety, and other concerns that can look like ADHD

How the evaluation works

The process has three steps: an intake session, a testing session of 2 to 5 hours, and a feedback session where we review your written report and recommendations. More about the testing process.

After testing

Your report explains what the results mean for work, school, and daily life, with practical recommendations. With your written consent, it can be shared with your doctor or employer.

Adult ADHD testing questions

Can ADHD be diagnosed for the first time as an adult?
Yes. ADHD begins in childhood, but many people are not diagnosed until adulthood, often when the demands of college, work, or family life outgrow the strategies that used to work.
Do I need someone who knew me as a child?
It helps but is not required. Input from a parent, sibling, or old report cards can show whether symptoms were present earlier in life, which is part of an ADHD diagnosis.
Can I take my ADHD medication on the day of testing?
Do not take stimulant medication the day of testing. Talk with your prescriber before stopping any medication.
Will you prescribe medication?
No. Dr. Walker is a psychologist and does not prescribe. With your written consent, your report can be shared with your doctor or psychiatrist to guide treatment. If you don't have a prescriber, see our preferred prescribing providers.
How long is the testing process and when can I expect results?
Testing typically takes 3 to 6 hours in total, depending on the purpose of the evaluation. With standard results, your feedback session is scheduled about two to three weeks after testing. Same-day results are available for an additional $600, paid when you book to reserve your appointment. The fee is non-refundable and not reimbursable by insurance. Availability depends on the type of evaluation and scheduling, so please contact the office about current openings. More on same-day testing.
Does insurance cover psychological testing?
Many insurance plans cover psychological testing, but coverage depends on the provider, reason for testing, and specific insurance policy. Insurance does not cover testing for learning disorders because it isn't considered medically necessary. A quote of benefits is not a guarantee of payment. You will be responsible for any cost not covered by insurance.
